Caloosahatchee - Big Cypress Watershed Council
  (Continued from page 1)

In the Caloosahatchee and Big Cypress Watersheds, there have been many attempts by federal, state and local governmental entities to address water resource management concerns, with varying degrees of success.  There has not, however, been an effort to develop a true partnership between all the stakeholders in the Southwest Florida watersheds.  We think that the time may be right to do this now, and we’d like to share our ideas with you and get your thoughts on the concept of a Caloosahatchee - Big Cypress Watershed Council.
The purpose of a Caloosahatchee - Big Cypress Watershed Council would be to:
*  Develop a consensus (or attempt to) on water resource issues among all stakeholders including environmental, recreational, flood protection, supply and resource extraction (including commercial and recreational fishing industry) representatives.  Develop water resource management priorities within the watershed that promote balanced and sustainable use.
*  Develop a database on water parameters

(ground and surface) monitored in the watersheds and make this information available to regulators and resource stakeholders.  Seek peer review analysis of water resource information.  Develop a source of water resource experts as advisors and speakers for stakeholder meetings, etc.
*  Create a forum for dispute resolution among stakeholders and regulatory agencies.
*  Propose county comprehensive plan amendments for better water resource management.
*  Sponsor educational seminars and workshops on water resource issues.
*  Produce an annual water resource review document.
*  Encourage citizen participation and stewardship in water resource issues.
*  Develop an interactive web site and produce a newsletter to foster the exchange of
information among stakeholders.
