MangoMania Clock Running - Only Days 'till Opening
Record Setting Number of Vendor's


In the year since the last Mangomania our country was attacked and thousands of innocent people lost their lives. Thousands more may have also if not for the heroism shown by New York City’s Fire fighters. For that reason and to honor the heroes who are our neighbors, The Pine Island Chamber of Commerce will have the Pine Island fire fighters cut the ribbon marking the start of this year’s festivities. Once that ceremonial function is completed, the over 10,000 visitors expected this year will discover a record setting 120 plus vendors, over twice as many as last year, a cornucopia of musical entertainment,

mouth watering dishes from our outstanding local restaurants and a celebration of the tropical fruit responsible for it all --- the Mango. MangoMania 2002 Queen, Queen Nicole, The Fashionable, will be in attendance also. During the festival and throughout her


The Matlacha Hookers

The Matlacha/Pine Island Fire Dept. presented The Matlacha Hookers organization with an "In Appreciation of Fire Prevention Partner" certificate, For support of Fire Education and Prevention. --The Matlacha Hookers meet on the second Tuesday of each month at 6:30, the location varies.
The June meeting will be on June 11th at the Waters Edge Pub.

 

 

MangoMania 2002 Kick-Off

The MangoMania Kick-Off Party was held at the Tropic Star Cruises in Bokeelia.. As the guests and media arrived, they could see the food arranged on the brightly decorated tables. Catered by the owners of Scooters Deli located at Pine Island Center, you could feel the anticipation in the room. Cindy Riso and Jennifer Jennings, who dressed the part in their colorful dresses, came with a basket filled to the rim with Pine Island grown fruit. Cindy will be manning the Chamber sponsored Tasting Table (see Photo Page 8) which will be displaying different kinds of fruit available at MangoMania.
Sally Tapager, President of the Greater Pine Island Chamber of Commerce crowned Nicole Ashmore of Bokeelia, MangoMania Queen 2002 (photo above). Nicole will now begin her reign for the MangoMania festivities. After being crowned Nicole walked amongst the guests "knighting" and "ladying" all that attended the kickoff, including André Mule, a Chamber board member and MangoMania committee member. Nicole left no one out, young and old were all honored.

Water and Wastewater Facilities Plans Adopted

--
A resolution to adopt Water and Wastewater Facilities Plans, and authorize their submission to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) was approved by Lee County Board of Commissioners. Facilities Plans must be approved by the Board prior to submission to the DEP. Submission of the Facilities Plans will allow the County to be considered for low-interest loans, for Water and Wastewater Capital Improvement Projects, through the State.
--Assistant County Attorney David M. Owen approved the Notice of Intent and Affidavit Utilities Director Rick Diaz explained that the Water Facilities Plan and Wastewater Facilities Plan, represent the new version of plans originally required by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) when the Construction Grants Program was established.
