Dear Editor,
In driving around the island this past weekend,
I have compiled a list of driving suggestions for our visiting friends
that should assist them and make their stay in our State more pleasant.
* When approaching the four way stop
at Stringfellow, it is suggested you look for
friends and acquaintances that may also be at
the intersection. Sometimes you may have to sit through your turn
a couple of times to ensure that you see everyone. This is an excellent
way to boost your social status.
* If you are in a hurry and you
need to run the four way, the faster you drive through it, the smaller
the chance you have of getting hit. If you do get hit, relax, this
is just the natural selection process for body shops, auto repair
garages, and new car sales.
* Breaking should be done
as hard and late as possible to ensure that your ABS kicks in,
giving you a nice relaxing foot massage as the pedal
pulsates. For those of you without ABS, it’s a chance to stretch
your legs.
* Speed limits are arbitrary
figures, given only as suggestions. Feel free to modify them
to suit your driving style and mood. The slower
the better.
* Under no circumstances should
you leave a safe distance between you and the car in front of you, or the
space will be filled in by someone else, putting you in an even more
dangerous situation.
* Turn signals will give away
your next move. Confuse everyone by leaving it on at all
times, this way you won’t lose your cloak of privacy,
it’s really no one else’s businessm where your going.
* Always slow down and rubberneck
at an accident, or even if someone is just changing
a tire. This is southern courtesy.
* When going over the bridges
and through Matlacha, be sure to slow to a crawl so you
can take in all the wonderful sites. You may
come to a complete stop if someone fishing on the bridge lands a good one.
It is customary for us to acknowledge someone’s lucky catch by stopping
and taking pictures.
* Throwing litter on the roads
adds variety to the landscape, it also gives Adopt-A- Highway crews something
to clean up.
* Seeking eye contact with
another driver revokes your right of way, except at the Center where it
acts as an invitation to duel or play chicken.
* Heavy fog, or rain
are no reason to change your driving habits. Real Florida female
drivers can put on pantyhose, apply eye makeup and read the front page
of the paper during these conditions at 75m.p.h. in bumper-to-bumper
traffic.
Kudos to those visitors that
have already been practicing these rules. We appreciate your strict
adherence and general courtesy to those of us that live here all the time.
Keep up the good work!

Dear Editor,
Here is a situation that needs attention. The Pine Island Goodwill. is
going to close its doors at the end of the month.There are no deliveries
being made there now by Goodwill trucks. This is a serious concern to
most of Matlacha and Pine Island residents. The many of the people here
depend on this store for their clothing and home furnishings. Also, many
people have no way of getting off island and even, so many of our residents
cannot afford even Walmart or K-Mart prices. Also, many of our seasonal
visitors count on this store to supply them what they need for their stay
here on the islalnd. One of the major problems is the cost of the rent
at the location now. It is VERY expensive! We truly need to do something
to keep this store out here on our island and available to islanders.
Also, we need to know if there are other locales (more affordable) for
this wonderful store out here. Here is a number to call to investigate
what is happening: 995-2106. Any way that you can help...will be GREATLY
APPRECIATED by everyone out here!! Thanks so much,
Nancy Goodwin

Dear PIN
...It is wonderful to be able to keep up with
Pine Island happenings, even though we have relocated to Hawaii.
Keep up the good work.

(Greetings)
Howwwdee! Ya'll
You know, life on Pine Island will be so
much easier when our outhouses have indoor plumbing and we don't have to
read our computer screens by candle light!
Anyway, welcome to another little source
of potentially pretentious, mostly fleeting, and too often imprecise information.
However, be suspicious of any other information related organization suggesting
they provide anything else. It is the nature of the game. The same incident
is seen and interpreted by different people from different points of view
and often inaccurately.
The difference here is that we know it. In addition,
some of us were public school trained, so you might not find any Shakespeare's
here, but as far as we know, he didn't go to an Ivy league school either.
Consider this web site no substitute for anything, just another source
of information and another point of view.
Although we're under construction, one thing
this will not be is a dead web site. It will be continuously updated and
upgraded to make it easier to quickly find and easily read the most current
information. What we want is to treat you like a relative, i.e., visit
often, but not too long. Go outside and enjoy what Pine Island (or
wherever you live) has to offer unless it's too late then just go to bed.
