  "Smiles….
…to the Greater Pine Island Chamber of Commerce for including entertainment for  teen-agers in this year's MangoMania festival. Youngsters had a Teen Stage featuring local rock bands and dance groups. It was great to see green-haired and other "odd" looking teen-agers enjoy the festival. Most festivals cater to small children and adults but fail to include entertainment teens really enjoy."  Reprinted from the News-Press Opinion Page, Tuesday, July 11, 2000

All the reviews are not in but seem to be either hot or cold on the entertainment. At the risk of being painfully obvious, nobody likes anyone else's style of music. In an effort to damn with faint praise, the condescending will suggest that they like all kinds of music, but that the  "_______" music was too loud (insert the whatever type of music they really don't like whether country, opera, rock, etc.).
Music produced by any four or five piece band with electronic instruments, or a high school band or a symphony orchestra with acoustic instruments will have essentially the same sound pressure, the only difference, of course, will be the type of music. Been to any Fair midway recently?
No case can be made that any style of popular music in any era has more redeeming value over another style. Indeed, a case CAN be made that all popular music regardless of style or era may be amoral. However, until and maybe even after the Second Coming, "popular" music is part of the historical record and probably here to stay.
As it relates to today's non-conformists teen-agers, their style of dress, hair and music is no more shocking to us than our style of dress, hair and music was to our parents. Since there is still left a few simple freedoms, the non-conformists are as important as are the conformists in this country. After all the founding father's by any measure were non-conformists. In fact, I find this particular group to be smarter, more responsible and have far better kinds jobs than did my generation. Oh, by the way they tend not to be as judgmental or prejudice either.
Knowing there would be lots of people looking to criticize, the crowd of kids performing  and  enjoying  the music at the Teen stage were far more polite, helpful, tidy, cooperative and extremely grateful than were many, maybe most of the "adults." Too many forget that these teens are exposed to much more sophisticated media than any other generation and they still have to keep their unbounded energy and raging hormones reined in. Their music helps do this and provides them an outlet for their opinions which (valid or not), to their way of thinking is a rare event… as was also true for your era or style of music. Should their standard be higher than the adults?

  Dear PIN

I wonder why the folks at your paper and in your area seem to think of themselves as fine, patriotic Americans, yet they think they have the right to tell other people what they can do with their own private property. I am referring to something I read at your site about plans to tear down someone's pole barn. Seems to me if I buy property and then have to pay property taxes to the government to keep my property, the least I should be allowed is to build on MY PROPERTY.
You people kid yourselves when you think you are good Americans.

Dear Consuelo,

While we tend to agree with you, we simply reported remarks made at the meeting and made no comment. County commissions, zoning boards, state legislatures are under extreme  pressure everyday to make everyone living in any given area conform to some arbitrary set of rules. As was illustrated in the presidential election, the only obviously large difference was that between rural and urban areas. Urban dwellers have diametrically opposed philosophies and requirements to those who live in rural areas. Neither group wants the other dictating or legislating its philosophy. It's always been and always will be. The situation gets muddy as rural areas become urbanized. Furthermore, it's often your very own next door neighbor who considers it his responsibility to keep an eye on how you live your life. However, they all pay taxes and still consider themselves good Americans. The question is... how to make these philosophies coexist without torturing  the U.S. Constitution...the ONLY  document which guarantees freedom (to coexist) for all...and it's just a piece of paper.
