PINE ISLAND LIBRARY
Pine
Island’s library building is on Russell Road, just north of Phillips Park
at Pine Island Center. It is part of the Lee County Library system. It
is open to all, but a small fee is charged to non-residents.
PUBLIC WATER
Virtually all of
the Pine Island/Matlacha area is provided water from the Greater Pine Island
Water Association. The plant and well fields are on Stringfellow
Rd., 1-1/2 miles South of Pine Island Center. The Reverse Osmosis (RO)
plant is a modern and up-to-date facility. A one-time connection
fee of $1,294.50 is required when a property owner wishes to join the system.
Membership is voluntary and many residents maintain and operate their own
well water systems.
PUBLIC SEWERS
Matlacha is, at
present, the only community with a public system. Private systems are in
use in many island condominiums and Mobile home zoned areas. Much of the
remainder of Pine Island use septic tank systems which work well when installed
correctly.
LOCAL GOVERNMENT
No community in
the Pine Island/Matlacha is incorporated. Lee County is the seat of government.While
the Courthouse is in Ft. Myers, there are various branches in incorporated
Cape Coral.
AREA CLIMATE
There no official
readings taken locally. In Ft. Myers, about 20 miles away, Lee County provides
emergency Advance Life Support Services. One the summer mean is 81.9 with
the winter mean at 69.5 degrees. Our average rainfall is 53.4 inches, most
of which falls in late summer afternoon showers. The winter months
are considered the dry season.
AREA GEOGRAPHY
Pine Island is the largest of
a group of islands along Southwest Florida’s Gulf Coast close to Ft. Myers.
This island is 17 miles long and is two miles wide at its widest. It is
almost completely surrounded in mangroves and protected wildlife
preserves including all of Little Pine Island, most of Pine Island Sound
and Matlacha Pass. The island has numerous Bald Eagle and Osprey
nests, and tropical fruit and plant groves. The highest elevations is along
highway 767.
HEIGHT AND DENSITIES
A maximum of five units
per acre in built-up areas of the island, one unit per acre in the rural
areas. The maximum height allowance is 38 feet.
AREA HOSPITALS
The closest hospital is Cape
Coral Hospital and Clinic, located on Del Prado Blvd. Other hospitals
in the Lee County area are Lee Memorial, Southwest Florida Regional Medical
Center, and Gulf Coast Hospital.
FIRE PROTECTION
Fire protection
is provided by Matlacha-Pine Island Fire Control District. The headquarters
is at Phillips Park, Pine Island Center. There are additional Stations
at St. James City, Matlacha and Bokeelia.

AMBULANCE SERVICE
An ambulance
is always stationed at the fire department headquarters at Pine Island
Center and provides emergency Advance
Life Support Services.
SHERIFF PROTECTION
Being unincorporated,
the Island is served by the County’s Sheriff’s Department. Most often there
are two cars on patrol on the island. Many areas also have Neighborhood
Watch Patrols and are in direct radio contact with the Sheriff’s
Department.
ISLAND EDUCATION
Pine Island Elementary
School is a highly rated Lee County school. Other students are bussed to
Trafalgar Middle School and High School students attend Mariner High School,
both in Cape Coral. Lee County now has School Choice. Vocational School
High Tech North. Edison Community College, University of South Florida
and Gulf Coast University are area Colleges.
CAMPGROUNDS, RV RESORTS
Northern Pine Island
has Pink Citrus Trailer Park, Bocilla Island Seaport and Tropic
Isle Campground and RV Park. The southern end of Pine Island, Ft. Myers/Pine
Island KOA and Cherry Estates RV Park.
GOLF COURSE
Pineland’s Alden
Pines Country Club with 18 holes, 6,265 yards, Par 72, is open to the public.
SWIMMING POOL
At Phillips Park at Pine
Island Center there is an olympic size public pool. There is a small users
fee.
TENNIS
There are lighted
public courts at Phillips Park, Pine Island Center.
